Wes Anderson’s next film Asteroid City is coming out soon, and TikTok really seems to care. And, frankly, so does Instagram. Through short videos and reels, everyone seems to be an auteur these days, hopping on the Wes Anderson trend these days and creating videos with his dreamlike color palettes and quirky aesthetic.
The Instagram account “Accidentally Wes Anderson” has been cataloguing these for years, but now that video is where it’s at, it’s so much easier to turn your life into a whimsical masterpiece a la The Royal Tenenbaums. Never mind that the main characters in his films always seem befallen by one calamity after another. Let’s focus on the whimsy, folks!
The new TikTok trend owes its popularity to Ava Williams, who told Newsweek that she started it while on a family holiday.
She posted her April 8 video with the words “You better not be acting like you’re in a Wes Anderson film when I get there.” The TikTok video has since received 13 million views and inspired hundreds of others to jump on the #wesandersontrend and do the same. Here are some of our favorites so far.
@avawillyums With a good imagination, everything is symmetrical. Let a girl day dream! #wesanderson
How Do You Make Your Own Wes Anderson Trend Video?
According to Irina, who has been creating a series of travelogues using this style, here are some tips.
- Film something. Preferably with just one character in the frame most of the time. Keep your camera straight. If possible, everything in frame should be symmetrical. Avoid panning.
- Drop it into Adobe Premiere.
- Adjust the colors using this Luts Pack from analogicalab.
- Overlay your video with the Atlanta Rosery font.
Esno Art offers a few more tips regarding color grading.
@esno.art Every image needs it’s own adjustments, but here is some general pointers 🎨 Brightness and Exposure: Adjust until you get a bright image without loosing details Temperature: Adjust until shadows have a lightly warm tone HSL Blue/Turqoise: Hue down, Saturation up to preference and Luminance up HSL Orange: Hue and Luminance down HSL Red: Hue up and Luminance slightly down HSL Yellow: Hue slightly down Graphs/Curves Red: Add a point and push the shadows slightly down Basic edits: Adjust back Contrasts, Shadows and saturation to your preferred levels. #wesanderson #alexandredesplat #wesandersonedit #wesandersonaethetic #westok #accidentallywesanderson
And Keith Fadi — whose lunch with his wife also went viral — shares how he did it.
@keithafadi Replying to @Kyujin here is a breakdown of how I put my Wes Anderson videos together. Shout out to @Ava Williams for starting such a fun trend 🙌🏿
Wes Anderson TikTok Trend Videos and Photos
1. Harry Potter
Someone put the characters from Harry Potter into Midjourney to see them in Anderson’s world. Somehow Snape still looks grumpy.
2. Breaking Bad
Oscar Nunez did Breaking Bad which makes us actually want to watch more than the first episode of that show. Yup, we know. Guess what we skipped the Wire too.
3. Romance Novel Adaptations Wes Anderson Style
Netflix, make these, you cowards.
4. Lunch With His Wife
Relatable.
@keithafadi I’ve recently discovered Wes Anderson and his films so here’s a quick & fun little video for this trend
5. Showcasing the War in Ukraine Using Anderson’s Style
Capturing tragedy in a way that drives the gravity of it home that much more.
@valerisssh Inspired by a girl in TikTok who made a video about her train trip and I decided to make something like she, but about war consequences that happens everyday. #ukraine
6. A Weekend In Budapest (Sans Hotel)
We’ve never wanted to book a trip faster. Also, that pink and orange outfit is fire.
@irinahp Accidentally Wes Anderson in Budapest. For those who’re planning on visiting it soon, here some of my favorite spots in the city: • Gellért Baths (retro vibes) • New York Café: most beautiful café • The Parliament (especially magical at night) • hotels: Anantara Hotel, Baltazar, Brody House #accidentallywesanderson #wesandersontrend #wesanderson #budapest
7. Traveling Through Lisbon
Irina followed up her popular Budapest weekend with this one in Vienna.
@irinahp I got so many questions about this Wes Anderson editing style, so here how I did it: * Edited in: Adobe Premiere * Color filter in Adobe Premiere : ‘LUTs Pack Wes Anderson’ from analogicalab * Font: Atlanta Rosery * Symetrical & colorful scenes I hope you like this Vienna edit. It’s a tiny homage to this beautiful city that’s been so good to me! Most of the spots are named in the video, so you can save this for your next visit. Now, from all my 4 #wesandersontrend videos, which one is your favorite? I’m curious! 😉 #wesanderson #accidentallywesanderson
